The Persian fallow deer (Dama mesopotamica) is an endangered species whose continued existence relies heavily on captive breeding initiatives. Assessing population dynamics and trends in these breeding facilities, especially when demographic data is scarce, is vital for effective conservation management. This study conducted a comparative analysis of population trends across four captive breeding sites: Arsanjan, Miankotal, Bagh-e Shadi, and Manesht & Ghalarang, utilizing census data. Key metrics, including population growth rate, natural and management growth rates, and the reproduction-to-mortality ratio, were analyzed in conjunction with environmental influences. Findings revealed distinct patterns of population growth and stability among the sites. Arsanjan demonstrated the most significant cumulative population increase, with 78 fallow deer born over 13 years. In contrast, Bagh-e Shadi maintained a stable population with minimal fluctuations, while Miankotal and Manesht-Ghalarang faced considerable instability and depended heavily on management interventions. The study concluded that the stability of populations in captive breeding centers is contingent upon balancing growth and decline rates and aligning management strategies with habitat carrying capacity, rather than relying solely on short-term management tactics.
